Horned Larks are small songbirds that are the only true lark species native to North America.
Horned larks are ground-dwelling birds have distinctive eyebrow stripes and black horns. Horned Larks return to their natal breeding grounds every migration. Cold and snow doesn’t bother them, they seen to prefer lower temperatures. Nests are well camouflaged.
Their biggest threats come from the activities of human beings, who shoot and trap owls, but also build high-tension wires and run into owls with their cars.
Larks live in native prairie habitat, but have adapted to nesting in low-growing and sparely vegetated grasslands at airports, coastal dunes and dredge spoil islands. They are looking for seeds and early flying insects along the roads where the ground is exposed. Drive along any rural road at this time of year and you can see flocks of these birds. Horned Larks are short tailed social birds that live throughout the United States, including all of Alaska and Canada.
