Robert Aldrich's allegorical "Ulzana's Raid" is a brutal, bleak Western that uses the harsh Arizona landscape and its unforgiving Apache inhabitants as a metaphor for the Vietnam War… Inspired by John Ford’s The Searchers, screenwriter Alan Sharp based Raid on the true story of Apache warrior “Ulzana,” who killed settlers during a murderous spree in 1885.
A messenger arrives at Fort Lowell and the word … OPENING: On the San Carlos Indian Reservation sometime in the 1880’s, a group of Chiricahua Apaches led by Ulzana (Joaquin Martinez) steal some horses (considering their need for horses later, maybe they should have taken more than one each) and leave on a raid. Sharp has said he wanted the Apache to represent the “spirit of the land,” along with its hostility and harshness.

Ulzana's Raid is a 1972 American western film starring Burt Lancaster, Richard Jaeckel, Bruce Davison and Joaquin Martinez. The bleak and nihilistic tone of U.S. troops chasing an elusive merciless … Aldrich made several other good Westerns: Apache, Vera Cruz (both with Burt Lancaster) and The Last Sunset. Aldrich and Lancaster achieve this, while casting a dark shadow over the race relations of the period. Aldrich even used Richard Jaeckel as the tough sergeant, reprising his role from The Dirty Dozen.
