Coral are still alive when they bleach, but they’re at risk—essentially immunocompromised—and many eventually starve and die, turning a dark brown. Rising ocean temperatures are considered one of the greatest threats to the Great Barrier Reef because of the extreme nature of climate change. They do become more vulnerable to death however, especially if the stress continues for a long period of time.
